“My daughter, Julia, joined Borinquen Dance Theatre nearly six years ago when she was 8. Shortly thereafter, Nydia Padilla-Rodriguez, Borinquen’s founder and artistic director, asked me to be part of the planning committee for annual fundraisers to support Borinquen’s mission of “Building the Desire to Succeed through the Discipline of Dance.”
I help publicize the event. That publicity has led to articles in local media publications as well as broadcasts utilizing television, radio and social media outlets. Through these efforts, Borinquen has been featured on “Rochester in Focus” on Channel 10, Norma Holland’s “Many Voices, Many Visions” on 13WHAM-TV and on “Arts Friday” with Bob Smith on WXXI’s AM 1370 Connection.
Additionally, this year, I took on the task of editing and writing content for the program book for the June 2 “Faces of El Caribe” event at the Rochester Museum and Science Center to celebrate 31 years of success and provide financial support for Borinquen Dance.
This year, we’ve also sought to increase community awareness of Borinquen Dance Theatre’s efforts and expand Borinquen’s outreach and thus create a better future for the entire community. And the program book reflects that vision.
I am just one of many volunteers who have joined forces to support Borinquen Dance throughout the years. We hope this event will foster more involvement and support from community leaders to make BDT’s vision a reality: Providing as many children as possible with the opportunity to use dance education as a bridge to success!
It continues to be my pleasure to support Nydia and Borinquen Dance Theatre.”
