Julio Vazquez, Founder and Former Administrator of Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School
2025 Rochester Hispanic Business Person of the Year
Julio Vazquez has dedicated over 50 years to uplifting Rochester’s Hispanic community. As a founding member of the Ibero-American Action League (IAAL) in 1967, he spent three decades at the agency, culminating in his tenure as President and CEO from 1993 to 2006. Under his leadership, the agency expanded its advocacy for social justice, and in 2000, he spearheaded the establishment of the Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School, where he continues to serve as Board Chair.
His impact extends through both civic leadership and lifelong volunteerism. After serving as Rochester’s Commissioner of Community Development, he continued his advocacy through roles on boards such as the Greater Rochester Housing Partnership and the Latino Rotary Club. A prominent community voice, Mr. Vazquez has authored numerous socio-economic essays for the Democrat and Chronicle and published his memoir, Journey of a Puerto Rican Jíbaro. Now a staple in local schools, his book documents the community’s history of struggle and resilience, cementing his status as a vital role model for the Rochester region.
