This organization has been serving the Rochester community for nearly one hundred years. With the leadership of Kodak’s founder George Eastman, Rochester established what was known at the time as War Chest. The country was getting out of the first world war and people needed help. At the time it brought together agencies doing similar work to share in one appeal to help those in need.
Later on, it adopted the present name as other cities were also organizing under the same umbrella. Although the work of UW has evolved and changed through the century, it remains the main entity that lends a helping hand to many sectors in the community.
