Manuel Rivera-Ortiz is a documentary photographer and former features writer at the Democrat & Chronicle, Gannett Rochester Newspapers. He is is an alumni of the Columbia University Joseph Pulitzer Graduate School of Journalism, and Nazareth College of Rochester, English/Literature/Linguistics major. He has been awarded for his work documenting people’s living conditions in the developing world as one of the “50 Great Stories” of the past century of journalism at Columbia.
As President & Founder of “The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation for Documentary Photography & Film,” he helps support and encourage emerging and established photographers and filmmakers to engage in social documentary projects that change lives. His foundation operates a museum in the south of France in Arles, the city of Van Gogh. This past year, his foundation opened its biggest exhibition that included works by Taiwanese artists, Chinese artists, as well as the opening of the 6oth Anniversary exhibition of MOTOWN Records. The successful opening garnered much fanfare not only for Manuel’s work on children exhibited during the summer/fall season in Arles, but for the entirety of the house landing it, and his foundation on the cover of Rolling Stone, on the pages of Vanity Fair, Vogue, ELLE, NYT; on French local and national television, radio talk shows as well as in international media including Switzerland, Italy, Spain and much more.
Manuel’s photographs are included in American and international collections, including The George Eastman House and the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, MO. Manuel has headed prizes such as for the Paris College of Art. Members included Ms. Anne Cartier-Bresson, administrator of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, and the French Society of Photography. Manuel has acted as a nominator for the prestigious Prix Pictet. Prix Pictet is a global award in photography and sustainability for over six years under the tutelage of Mr. Michael Benson, creator of Photo London. He has currently also been tapped to be a nominator for the prestigious LEICA Oskar Barnack Award in photography for which he is presently selecting portfolios. Manuel also heads The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation Grant in Documentary Photography, and is the author of four books including “India: A celebration of Life!”
