Our special guest for January is Dr. Bolgen Vargas. He’ll be sharing on The Role of Education in Our Society and Economy.
Dr. Vargas will discuss the interconnection of public education institutions and the well-being of our community, including students, families, business among others. He will emphasize the elements necessary for public school systems and businesses to establish a highly collaborative interdependent environment to advance the mission of educating the next generation of children to play a role in various aspects of our larger society., including the economy and civic life. He will spend 10-15 minutes making brief remarks about his experience as an educator in multiple roles including: adult education, K-12 urban and suburban education, administration as superintendent, and in multiple community organizations including president of the Board of Education. Dr. Vargas will draw from his multiple experiences and examples from his recently published book, “Let Our Children Soar! The Complexity and Possibilities of Educating the English Language Student.” Dr. Vargas prefers that the majority of time during his presentation be spent in a dialogue format, addressing questions and concerns from the audience.
Bolgen Vargas, born in a rural hamlet in the Dominican Republic, overcame humble beginnings to graduate from high school in New York City. A SUNY Brockport and University of Pennsylvania, GSE graduate, he dedicated his career to education, serving as Superintendent in Rochester, NY, and Manchester, NH. Dr. Vargas emphasizes setting high expectations and fostering partnerships with colleges, businesses, and community organizations to address diverse student needs. His strategic resource allocation in Rochester improved financial ratings significantly, reflecting effective management. A UPenn Mid-Career Program graduate, he authored articles and a book, “Let Our Children Soar: the complexity and possibilities of educating the English language student.” The book received acclaim for its focus on individual student experiences.
